Our first night off

This week has marked a big stage in both Éowyn’s development and our own as parents.  For Christmas my mom, Nanny Fran, bought us a two part present a ‘Couples Experience’ voucher, and while we were taking advantage of that, she would look after Éowyn.  You could say that mom bought a day with her grandchild but she knows that she doesn’t have to do that.

We decided to use the voucher to book a spa day at the Marriott Hotel and Country Club at the Forest of Arden for our wedding anniversary and then on the back of that a night at the hotel.  This meant that Éowyn would spent over 24 hours with Nanny Fran and Auntie Liz but without Mommy and Daddy.  To make this as easy as possible we travelled up to West Bromwich on Sunday.  It had been a while since Éowyn had seen her Nanny Fran but had soon made herself at home and was more interested in her nan and auntie as new playnates than her mom and dad.  We had arrived in West Bromwich a little earlier than we thought and had more than enough time to take Éowyn’s Great Great Uncle Albert out for Sunday lunch.  I think that she amazed him with how much she enjoys her food and how vocal she can be.

Sunday evening, Liz’s friend and Mom’s surrogate grandchildren paid Éowyn a visit.  It was really interesting to see Éowyn interacting with older children.  She loved it as you can see from the photos below and I’m sure that Amelia and Finn enjoyed it too.

So Monday morning came and as usual we woke with Éowyn and after her first morning feed we took her downstairs.  It was quite strange knowing that we were going to leave her for a day and have no way of telling her.  So after breakfast Nanny Fran took her upstairs to get washed and dressed and we left for our day (and night) away.  No kisses or waves goodbye as we drove away.  We were in two minds as whether this was best but listened to Nanny Fran’s advice and hoped that all would be well.

The hotel is a couple of miles from Meriden a village that lays claim to be the centre of England and after a day of relaxation and massages we decided to walk into the village for a gourmet pub meal at the Bull’s Head as we were assured that it was only a 20 minute walk.  Nearly an hour later we found ourselves in the village at the centre of England.  At just over 3 miles we would have needed to have walked at 9 miles an hour to have made it into Meriden in 20 minutes.  That is the equivalent of running a marathon in under 3 hours!  Not part of a relaxing day, especially up hill and down dale.

It was strange not to have Éowyn with us, and Lucinda obviously felt that more than I on the Monday and I had to prevent her from phoning mom and texting constantly.  However, Tuesday morning the roles were reversed and it was me that was anxious to get back.

Our return was a mixed blessing:  Éowyn had not missed us as much as we thought she would.  Obviously this is good, as it means that we can leave her with others and have some freedom and time to ourselves but at the same time a little disappointing that she didn’t miss us.  It is, I suppose, only our egos that assume that only we can possibly know what our child needs and it is good, nay crucial, for her development to realise that there are others that can look after her.  Not to mention good for us as parents to have time for us and our relationship.

Éowyn had a fabulous time at Nanny Fran’s as she was the centre of attention.  They went to the Sea Life centre in Birmingham (about as far from the sea as you can get in the UK!) as well as meeting Nanny Fran’s friends and visiting her Great-Grandma.

The journey back home was eventful too.  Lucinda had bought a rocking horse off ebay (for the grand total of £5.50) from a family in a village near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.  Conveniently this is not too far from our way home, so we decided to pick it up on the way back.  The transaction was smooth but as we left with the horse the call of the bladder and Éowyn’s feed, time beckoned and there was no welcoming hostelry on the horizon.  Sitting on a bench rocking a baby in a pushchair an elderly lady was the only person around to ask where the nearest pub or restaurant was.  ‘There isn’t one near”, she said and Lucinda returned to the car.  Before she had managed to climb back into the car to head home the lady called her back.  “I can’t see you without a cup of tea or the baby without her feed,” she insisted.  “Come back to my place.”  The lady was most insistent and it seemed as if it would offend not to take her up on her offer, so we did.

Her husband did not bat an eyelid that his wife had invited two strangers with a baby back to their house for a cup of tea and the chance to use the loo.  We sat with them for 90 minutes or so, drinking tea from china cups being forcefed kitkats while Éowyn nursed.  They were a lovely couple, so friendly and welcoming.  They were both approaching 90, yet scarcely looked over 70.  It was so uplifting to meet such kind people when there is such a barrage of depressing news in the media.  Marge and Len we tip our hats to you and only hope that we are enjoying life as much as you guys do now when the calendar reads 2060.

Today, saw another journey, this time south, for a rocking horse.  Yes Lucinda’s winning streak on ebay listed rocking horses extended to two (well Éowyn does mean ‘lover of horses’).  This one however was in Southampton and was actually a donkey.  In all fairness this second horse (donkey) will last her much longer and is much nicer (although don’t tell the frst one that!)  As we were down in deepest darkest Hampshire we decided that it would be nice to visit Lucinda’s friend Pam in Andover.  It was good catching up with Pam as we have not seen her for a while and to see her youngest daughter Zara who is growing up so fast.

Éowyn took another step in her development too, although not one under her control.  Finally she has teeth.  After what seems like an age her top two front teeth have cut through the gum and are growing well.  However, it is a little strange to see her with teeth after nine months with none.  Our little girl is growing up so fast!

Enjoy the new photos (and I have uploaded more of our wedding photos onto the Flickr pages too)

Happy New Year!

OK, a little belated but as you can see, I have been working on the website.  It was getting a little cumbersome so I have tried to streamline it a little, and I will probably be tinkering with it over the next couple of weeks, until I am happy.  There are also some new photos on our Flickr site, so feel free to have a little look there too.

So how was Éowyn’s first Christmas?  As you can appreciate she was only 10 weeks old and so had no understanding of what was going on.  As long she gets fed, is entertained and has her nappy changed she is happy.  However, we have kept all her Christmas cards so that when she can appreciate them she can read all the messages that you have all sent.  Again we have to say a big thank you to all of you that sent cards and pressies, she is one lucky lady.

We were invited around our friends, Danny and Andrea’s for a Christmas Eve party, which was great to catch up with our friends, as since Éowyn has been born we have not met up with them as often as we used to.  In fact I have not, as yet, arranged a night out with the lads to wet Éowyn’s head, apologies all around, I will pull my finger out I promise.

Christmas Day was spent around Lucinda’s parents along with Lucinda’s immediate family, so John and Jenny had all their descendants, quite a houseful, but really enjoyable and relaxing, as Lucinda’s parents looked after us all very well.  Éowyn was very well behaved, waking only for some food and a cuddle from Nan and Granddad (see photos below) after we had all eaten to bursting point.

Working in sports related TV means that Boxing day is not a day off, in fact it is one of our busiest days and so my Christmas holiday was over before it started.  However, it means that I don’t suffer from the back to work blues that is possibly affecting many of you this week, and at least I am back at work which is more than can be said for a great deal of people in these economic climes.

We paid a visit to Nanny Fran on the Monday and Tuesday after Christmas.  Mom was supposed to have been at work on those days but on Christmas Eve she had passed out in the kitchen, cutting her forehead quite badly and knocking herself out.  She was taken to hospital and after a barrage of tests was released that evening with 5 days worth of antibiotics.  She spent most of the Christmas period convalescing being looked after by my sisters.  I think Éowyn’s visit cheered her up, but it was evident that mom was ill as she was not putting up a fight when we waited on her, not like her.

New Year’s Eve was a quiet affair, again I was working on the 31st and then the 1st so even if we had wanted to we could not have had a heavy day.  So we stayed up drinking champagne and went to sleep just after midnight, my how things have changed!

Over the last fortnight Éowyn has started not only to roll on to her side, but straight over on to her belly.  Unfortunately, she then gets a little frustrated.  She understands the mechanism behind crawling, but has neither the strength or the technique to actually move.  Which we are thankful for but I don’t think that it will be too long.  She also enjoys pulling herself up to a sitting position.  (In truth you are doing most of the work, but she is definitely helping).  However, the biggest step she has made in the last week, was made last weekend.  She has started to sleep in her own room at night.  She has slept through the night for quite a number of weeks now and as she is rapidly outgrowing her moses basket, we thought it was time that she got used to her own room.  For the time being we put her to sleep in her moses basket in the cot, but as you can see from some of the photos below, we are trying to acclimatise her to the cot as that stage will soon be here.

The health visitor is very happy with Éowyn’s progress, she is following the weight gain curve very accurately now tipping the scales at 12lb 15oz (5.86kgs).  We have just got to book her next set of immunisations in the next couple of weeks.  Poor girl.

We would just like to thank everyone for their love and support of the last year and would like to wish you all the very best for 2009 and we look forward to sharing the adventure with you all.

Peace and love

‘Twas the week before Christmas

Apologies to those regular readers for not updating the website for a couple of weeks, but as I am sure you can all appreciate that working, looking after the little one and Christmas all at the same time means that priorities change.

I trust that you have all done your shopping, hung your decorations and bought the turkey.  If you have, then you have done a little better than the Bagnalls.  The Credit Crunch does not seem to have affected Shoppers around Staines.  The shelves are empty and the cupboards are bare, especially concerning Christmas trees.  We usually buy a real Christmas tree and so do not have an artifical one, however there has seemingly been a run on the Christmas tree shops around here and there are none of either variety available.  So for Éowyn’s first Christmas there will be no tree in our house.  Does this constitute child cruelty?  I think that at 10 weeks old that she will not even realise that it is Christmas and as long as she gets fed, changed and entertained that the occasion will just pass her by.

Christmas day should be a fun day for the family as we have been invited around Lucinda’s parents for the day, along with both of Lucinda’s brothers and their families.  Therefore, all five grandchildren will be celebrating Christmas together, which will be fantastic, if a little noisyl.  I will have to ensure that my camera and camcorder batteries are fully charged!  It would be perfect if there was a dusting of snow to wake up to.  Perhaps enough to make a snowman and have a snowball fight.  Although, the weather report isn’t promising.

Éowyn is due to have her 8 week injections on Tuesday.  She was due to have them last week, but the surgery phoned to cancel and offered another day next year.  The date offered was nearly after the date she is due for her second round of injections, and Lucinda had to argue to have them this side of Christmas.  If it has been the other way around, with us cancelling we would be labelled bad parents and lectured on how we were jeopardising the health of our child.  I will stop before this becomes a rant.

Our friend Alistair popped round on Saturday to meet Éowyn for the first time, and became the first man to buy her dinner.  Christmas dinner in a jar and a pudding (in a jar) to go with it.  She is a little young (both to eat solids and to accept dinner from older men) at the moment but we will save it up and she will probably have it around Easter.

Sunday marked a momentous occasion, it was the first time since Éowyn was born that West Bromwich Albion have secured all 3 points in a game.  A 2-1 win over the richest team in the world (Manchester City) at the Hawthorns meant although we are bottom for Christmas we are not out of touch, and the Great Escape part two is still a possibility.

Tune in next week for news of Éowyn’s (many) other Christmas gifts, but in the meantime here are a few more photos…

Merry Christmas to you all
